Columns and Articles by Joyce Maynard

For Writers

Joyce Maynard reads excerpts from her book in New York during her national book tour for her memoir, At Home in the World.
A lot of you have been telling me in your e-mails that you are writers yourselves. I don't set myself up as an authority here, but as a person who's been sitting herself down at the typewriter nearly every morning for 25 years, I do have a thing or two to say about the process of writing, and particularly autobiographical writing (though I'd better tell you right off the bat that I have absolutely no helpful advice on getting an agent.)

I thought I'd say a few words about the health benefits of telling your story on paper, then I'll try and talk you through the process I go through when I write. I'll explore more of the mechanics of locating what your own best story might be. I'll also tell you a little about how I started writing, myself, and where my ideas come from. If you've got questions, why not post them on the Discussion Forum, and I'll do my best to respond.

Of course, if you're interested in more in-depth instruction, I encourage you to think about joining me at a future writing workshop.
