A Letter From Joyce

January 1, 2004

Dear Friends,

A bougainvillea-shaded path in San Marcos. As those of you know, who have been visiting this spot for a while, I travel when I can to a little village in Guatemala, on the shores of Lake Atitlan, to write, and think, spend time with friends, eat avocados fresh off the tree, work on final revisions of my new novel, and swim. Things are pretty simple in San Marcos: no car, no phone, no internet (except when I walk into town to a little cafe where the power may or may not be on that day). I have spent enough time there that when I go back, people in the village will call me by the name they use for me there (because the "J" is hard to pronounce in Spanish). So in San Marcos, I am known as Feliz. And I am, too.

I'll be there for the month and a half -- returning home in mid-February, just in time for the paperback publication of The Usual Rules. I'm travelling to schools in a number of parts of the country (and hope more places will be added to the list; so if you're interested, write to my assistant on the Usual Rules Project, Sara Sanchez).

I'm planning to be running several writing workshops (fiction and nonfiction) next year -- both in my home, in Northern California, and in other places too. (Watch this spot for announcements of workshops, and of two writers' retreats I hope to be hosting -- one in Jamaica, one in the south of France.) One of the great additions to my life, this year, has come in the form of the students I've worked with over the last twelve months. I hope there will be many more.

Because internet access is limited for me, in Guatemala, I won't be visiting the discussion forum much while I'm away. (Plus, I'll be working on my book.) But I hope you'll continue to use this place as a spot to come and talk about whatever's on your mind. I like to think of our forum as a kind of endless dinner party, only the nourishment here comes in the form of stories.

So... buen provecho!

With friendship,

Joyce/Feliz
