With summer winding down -- children back to school, and all of us with gardens maxing out on zucchini bread, and (by the way) my new book, Internal Combustion, coming out very soon -- I thought this would be a good time to reconnect with subscribers to my website. If you visit the site you'll see lots of changes and updates, but in the spirit of reconnecting with the past, as well as looking ahead, I thought I'd initiate the project of sharing with you some of my writing from the past, spanning the thirty some years I've been publishing my work. Some of these essays speak to situations and circumstances that are no longer a part of my life: raising young children, being married (or being newly divorced, and still reeling), grieving over the recent death of my mother. Some -- written twenty years ago -- could have been written last week, the thoughts and feelings expressed are still so close to what I'd say, today. Either way, they tell the story of a woman's life and struggles, over a few decades, and because so many of the issues I struggled with over those years are likely to be shared with many others, I thought you might enjoy receiving one, now and then. In no particular order, here we go. I call this first story "Night in the Parking Lot." It ran in my Domestic Affairs column, back in 1985. And you might be interested to read the Author's Note that follows this one.) With friendship, Joyce P.S. from Myrna: Many of you have written to ask about whether or not the forum will return. We are still looking for a suitable replacement -- one that is less susceptible to hackers, and that will be a comfortable fit for our longtime forum participants. (And if you know of one, I'd appreciate hearing about it if you'll email me.) As soon as we get another up and running, we'll let you know.
